Almost every failed first Google Ads campaign fails the same way: tracking was never verified, match types were too broad, and the landing page was the homepage. Fix those three and you are ahead of most accounts we audit.
Step 1: Set Up Conversion Tracking First
Before a single keyword. If you cannot measure a conversion, Google's bidding has nothing to optimise toward and you are effectively paying for traffic at random.
- Install Google Tag via Google Tag Manager
- Define conversion actions with real values — a $40 lead and a $4,000 lead should not both count as "1"
- Add call tracking if phone enquiries matter
- Verify with Tag Assistant before spending anything
Step 2: Structure Around Intent, Not Products
Group keywords by what the searcher is trying to do, not by your internal catalogue. "Emergency ac repair" and "how does ac work" belong in entirely different campaigns with different budgets and different landing pages.
Step 3: Start With Phrase and Exact Match
Broad match with a new account and no conversion history is how budgets disappear. Start tight, mine the search terms report weekly, and widen deliberately once you know what converts.
Step 4: Write Ads That Match the Query
Responsive search ads with 12–15 headlines. Pin the one headline that must always appear. Include the search term where it reads naturally, and put the actual offer in the description rather than generic quality claims.
Step 5: Send Traffic to a Dedicated Page
Not your homepage. The page should match the ad promise, load in under two seconds, and have one obvious action above the fold.
Step 6: Set a Realistic Budget
You need roughly 30 conversions per month before automated bidding performs reliably. Work backwards: if your CPC is $8 and your landing page converts at 5%, each conversion costs about $160, so 30 conversions is roughly $4,800 per month. If that is out of reach, narrow the geography or the keyword set rather than spreading thin.
Step 7: The First Optimisation Pass
Wait two weeks. Then:
- Read the search terms report and add negatives aggressively
- Pause keywords with 100+ clicks and no conversions
- Check device performance — mobile often needs its own bid adjustment
- Review ad strength and replace weak headline assets
- Only then consider bid strategy changes
Common First-Campaign Mistakes
- Enabling Display Network expansion. It quietly eats budget on irrelevant placements. Turn it off.
- Changing bids daily. You are resetting the learning phase constantly. Give it two weeks.
- Ignoring negative keywords. This is where 30–40% of wasted spend lives in every account we inherit.
- Bidding on your own brand without checking. Sometimes necessary against competitors, sometimes pure waste. Test it.
Get the first three steps right and the rest is iteration. Get them wrong and no amount of optimisation rescues the account.
