Brand Identity Systems

A complete identity: typography, colour with verified contrast, photography direction, iconography and layout rules, written down so the work stays consistent once we are not the ones making it.

The problem

Brand guidelines are usually a beautiful PDF that answers none of the questions people actually have. What is the accessible text colour on brand blue? What does a table look like? What happens on a dark background? So everyone improvises and the brand drifts within a quarter.

How we do it

What the work actually involves

/01

Colour with contrast ratios published

Every approved text-on-background pairing tested against WCAG 2.2 AA and stated in the guide. This is where most identities fail in practice — the brand colour is unreadable at body size and nobody wrote down an alternative.

/02

A type scale, not a font list

Named sizes, weights, line heights and when to use each. "Headings use Instrument Sans" leaves every real decision to whoever opens the file next.

/03

Documented as tokens

The system is delivered as design tokens that map straight into code, so the developer implementation and the design file cannot drift apart.

/04

Dark mode decided, not discovered

If your product or site has a dark theme, the identity has to define it. Retrofitting is where brands end up with two unrelated palettes.

Common failures

Where this usually goes wrong

The three we are called in to fix most often. If any of these describe your current setup, that is the first thing we would change.

  • A guide that answers none of the real questions

What is the accessible text colour on brand blue? What does a table look like? What happens on dark? A beautiful PDF that skips these leaves everyone improvising, and the brand drifts within a quarter.

  • Listing fonts instead of defining a scale

"Headings use Instrument Sans" leaves every real decision to whoever opens the file next. Named sizes, weights and line heights are what make two designers produce the same page.

  • Treating dark mode as a later problem

If the product or site has a dark theme, the identity has to define it. Retrofitting is how brands end up with two unrelated palettes.

Measurement

How you will know it is working

Agreed before we start, so progress is visible in the months before it shows up in revenue.

Contrast documented
Every approved pairing with its ratio published in the guide. It is where most identities fail in practice.
At delivery
Tokens matching implementation
Design values and code values from one source. If they are typed twice they will diverge.
At build
Questions per month to the designer
A well-specified system generates few. A steady stream means the guide is not answering them.

A logo is one asset. An identity is the system everything else is built from — type, colour, imagery, layout and the rules connecting them. A logo without a system is why companies end up with a good mark and inconsistent everything else.
