Designed in monochrome first
If the mark does not work in one colour it is relying on gradients to do its job. It will be embroidered, etched and faxed at some point, and it needs to survive all three.

The problem
Most logo deliveries are a JPEG and a hope. There is no vector, no monochrome version, no clear-space rule and no favicon — so within a year there are five inconsistent variants in circulation and the sign company has redrawn it themselves.

16px favicon, app icon, business card, van door, building sign. A mark reviewed only at full screen fails the first two, which is where most people will see it.
SVG, EPS, PDF, PNG at multiple sizes, favicon set, monochrome, reversed, horizontal and stacked lockups — plus clear space, minimum size and what not to do.
