SEO vs GEO
Generative Engine Optimisation aims to be the source an AI answer is built from. Search Engine Optimisation aims to be a link in a ranked list. The technical groundwork is largely identical; what differs is content structure and how you measure success.

SEO
Ranking in the results list
Still the majority of search-driven revenue for almost every business, and the foundation GEO stands on.
Strengths
- Mature, measurable, and directly attributable to traffic
- Clear metrics: rankings, impressions, clicks, conversions
- Well-understood mechanisms and predictable levers
- Still where most search volume resolves
Trade-offs
- AI Overviews are absorbing clicks from informational queries
- Position one is worth less than it was
GEO
Being cited in AI answers
A growing and genuinely important layer, but early, hard to measure, and not yet a channel you can plan revenue around.
Strengths
- Reaches research that never becomes a search result click
- Being the recommended name shapes the shortlist
- Currently far less competed
Trade-offs
- Non-deterministic — the same prompt gives different answers
- Little to no click-through from some engines
- No established measurement standard
- Nobody can guarantee a citation
Where each one actually wins
| Criterion | SEO | GEO |
|---|---|---|
| Maturity | Twenty-five years | Two to three years |
| Measurability | Strong | Weak, sampling-based |
| Traffic sent | Direct | Little to none from some engines |
| Competition | High | Currently low |
| Technical requirements | Crawlable HTML | Crawlable HTML — the same |
| Content structure | Helpful | Decisive |
Our recommendation
Do SEO. Then structure the content so it can also be cited, which costs very little extra because it is the same clear, specific, answer-first writing that already helps human readers. Treat GEO as an extension of the content work rather than a separate retainer — anyone selling it as an independent discipline with guaranteed outcomes is overselling a channel that is two years old and non-deterministic. The one thing worth doing urgently is checking that AI crawlers can read your site at all; on client-rendered sites they cannot, and that is a mechanical problem with a real fix.
