Local SEO vs National SEO

Local search runs on a partly different set of signals — proximity, your Google Business Profile, citations and reviews. National search runs on content depth and links. Confusing the two is why local businesses buy national programmes that do nothing for them.

Option A

Local SEO

Winning your service area

Choose it when customers must physically reach you or you travel to them.

Strengths

  • Far less competition — you compete within a radius
  • Google Business Profile can outperform the website for calls
  • Results in weeks rather than quarters
  • Very high intent: local searches convert hard
  • Lower budget requirement

Trade-offs

  • Ceiling set by your city’s search volume
  • Proximity to the searcher is a factor you cannot change
  • Needs continuous review generation
  • Multiple locations multiply the work
Option B

National SEO

Competing everywhere

Choose it when you serve customers anywhere — e-commerce, SaaS, remote services.

Strengths

  • Enormously larger addressable market
  • No geographic ceiling
  • Compounds strongly with content and links

Trade-offs

  • Competes against everyone, including funded national brands
  • Six to eighteen months to meaningful results
  • Requires serious content and link investment
  • Much higher budget

Our recommendation

If customers come to your premises or you travel to them, local is not just the cheaper option — it is the correct one, and national tactics will waste money you could spend on reviews and your profile. If you ship nationally or sell remotely, national is unavoidable, and you should budget for eighteen months. Businesses that are both, like a retailer with a store and a shop, run local for the store and national for the catalogue as two separate programmes with separate reporting.

Yes, and multi-location retailers usually should. Treat them as two programmes with separate pages, separate keyword sets and separate reporting. Blending them produces location pages that rank for nothing and national pages that ignore your best customers.
