On-Page SEO

On-page SEO is making each page unambiguously about one thing. We restructure titles, headings, copy and internal links so a search engine — and a reader — can tell in three seconds what the page answers.

The problem

The usual failure is not thin content, it is unfocused content. One page tries to cover a service, a location, three sub-services and a case study, so it half-ranks for all of them and wins none. Meanwhile two other pages on the site are targeting the same query and splitting the authority between them.

How we do it

What the work actually involves

/01

One page, one query, one job

We map every page to the query it is meant to win and find the overlaps. Where two pages compete, one gets consolidated into the other with a redirect — cannibalisation is one of the most common and most fixable causes of a plateau.

/02

Titles and descriptions written for the click, not the crawler

Under 60 characters so nothing is truncated, the query near the front, and a reason to click that the other nine results are not giving. Rankings are only worth what the click-through rate makes them worth.

/03

Headings that outline the answer

One H1 stating the subject, H2s that read as the questions a buyer would ask in order. This is the structure AI answer engines quote from, and it is the structure a skim-reader follows.

/04

The answer in the first forty words

Featured snippets and AI summaries pull from the opening. Burying the answer under a paragraph of throat-clearing costs the position even when the page is otherwise the best result.

/05

Internal links with descriptive anchors

Links from related pages using the words people search, not "click here" and not the same anchor forty times. This is how a new page gets discovered and how an existing one gets reinforced.

Still deciding

  • SEO vs PPC

PPC buys traffic today and stops when you stop. SEO compounds and takes months. Most businesses need both, in that order.

Common failures

Where this usually goes wrong

The three we are called in to fix most often. If any of these describe your current setup, that is the first thing we would change.

  • Two pages chasing one query

Cannibalisation is invisible from the front end and obvious in Search Console: two URLs swapping positions for the same term, neither settling. Google is picking between them and picking differently each week. One of them has to be consolidated into the other.

  • Writing the title for the crawler

A title stuffed with the query and the city and the brand gets truncated and reads like spam to the person deciding which result to click. Position four with a good title outearns position two with a bad one, and that is measurable within a fortnight.

  • Burying the answer

Three paragraphs of context before the page says what it is about costs the featured snippet, costs the AI citation, and costs the reader who was going to scroll for four seconds. The answer belongs in the first forty words.

Measurement

How you will know it is working

Agreed before we start, so progress is visible in the months before it shows up in revenue.

Click-through rate by page
The fastest-moving on-page metric. A rewritten title shows up in Search Console CTR within days of the recrawl, independent of any ranking change.
Weeks 1–3
Cannibalising pairs
The count of queries where two of your URLs both rank. It should fall to near zero as pages are consolidated.
Weeks 2–6
Average position, target terms
Movement from 30 to 15 produces no traffic and is real progress. Tracking it is what stops the work looking like it failed in month two.
Weeks 4–12

One primary query and the variations that mean the same thing. "Emergency plumber El Paso" and "24 hour plumber El Paso" belong on one page. "Plumber El Paso" and "water heater repair El Paso" do not — those are different jobs with different intent, and forcing them together produces a page that satisfies neither.
